Believing that a German spy has killed her new husband (Franchot Tone), a struggling chorus girl (Jean Harlow) flees to Paris where she meets and marries a World War I pilot (Cary Grant), whose carefree ways bring unexpected results. His fifth wife, whom he was married to from 1981 to 1986, was also named Barbara. Mr. Grant was one of the first actors to declare personal independence from the studio system; he was a free agent by the early 1940's.
